My 15 kg dog ate a cup of turmeric rice from the BBQ buffet — will the spice and oils upset his stomach?

Short answer

A small amount of turmeric is safe, but a whole cup of spiced rice is likely to cause stomach upset. The oils and other seasonings in party food are the real problem, not the turmeric itself. Watch for vomiting or diarrhea over the next 12 hours. Offer plain water and skip his next meal to let his stomach settle. Call your own vet if the vomiting continues more than twice or he seems lethargic — otherwise, he should be fine after a bland diet for a day.

A small pinch is safe and is used in some joint supplements. Large doses upset the stomach.

Dogs and cats carry the same rating (Safe to share), so the notes below hold for either pet.

Turmeric is not toxic to dogs. The real limit is calories, fat and salt, so treat it as a small extra alongside the normal ration rather than a meal in itself.

There is no poisoning risk here, and the usual problem is simply eating too much at once: a heavy fat or salt load can bring on loose stools or a single vomit. Offer water, keep an eye on the pet for 24 hours, and do not induce vomiting.

Turmeric can stay on the rotation, but only as an extra mouthful: keep the rest of the day's food unchanged and watch the next walk and the stool that comes with it.
