My 18 kg dog ate about a cup of cooked beets that were left in a sealed container on the counter for 5 days — are fermented beets dangerous?

Short answer

The bigger risk is bacterial spoilage, not the beets themselves. Fermenting vegetables can grow mould or bacteria that cause vomiting and diarrhoea. A cup is a large amount, which could also lead to an upset stomach from the fibre and natural sugars. Watch for signs of gastrointestinal distress like vomiting, diarrhoea, or loss of appetite over the next 6-12 hours. Offer plenty of fresh water. If he seems lethargic, has bloody stool, or vomits repeatedly, call your vet. For future treats, stick to fresh, plain cooked beets in small amounts.

Cooked plain beets in small cubes are safe. Oxalates mean very large amounts could irritate the kidneys, so keep it a treat.

Dogs and cats carry the same rating (Safe to share), so the notes below hold for either pet.

Beets is not toxic to dogs. The real limit is calories, fat and salt, so treat it as a small extra alongside the normal ration rather than a meal in itself.

There is no poisoning risk here, and the usual problem is simply eating too much at once: a heavy fat or salt load can bring on loose stools or a single vomit. Offer water, keep an eye on the pet for 24 hours, and do not induce vomiting.

Why these cautions matter

A heavy salt load drives up thirst and urination, and in the worst cases leads to sodium ion poisoning, which is a genuine emergency.

Added sugar brings empty calories, and over months that means weight gain and dental disease — both far harder to undo than to avoid.

Beets can stay on the rotation, but only as an extra mouthful: keep the rest of the day's food unchanged and watch the next walk and the stool that comes with it.
