My 4 kg indoor cat licked pecans off a plate with leftover sauce — is this risky?

Short answer

The pecans themselves are not toxic to cats, but they are very fatty and can cause vomiting or diarrhoea. The bigger concern is mould — pecans often grow toxic mould that can harm your cat’s liver. Since she only licked them off a plate, the amount is small, but watch for lethargy, loss of appetite, or vomiting over the next 24 hours. If she shows any signs of illness, call your vet for guidance.

Very fatty and prone to mould. Not toxic, but not a good treat either.

Dogs and cats carry the same rating (Feed with care), so the notes below hold for either pet.

Pecans is not poisonous to cats, but it is easy to over-feed. Rich fat, salt or seasoning can bring on vomiting or diarrhoea within a day, and repeated large portions are a recognised trigger for pancreatitis.

If it ate some before you noticed, watch for vomiting, diarrhoea, loss of appetite, unusual tiredness or a painful, swollen abdomen over the next 24 hours. A one-off small amount in a healthy adult usually passes with water and rest; repeated exposure, a puppy or kitten, a senior, or a pet with an ongoing illness is a reason to call your vet the same day.

Why these cautions matter

Mouldy food can carry tremorgenic mycotoxins, which produce uncontrollable tremors and seizures rather than a simple stomach upset.

Rich, fatty food is the classic trigger for pancreatitis, a painful inflammation of the pancreas that usually needs veterinary treatment rather than rest alone.

Pecans can turn up now and then, but not as a daily habit: keep the rest of the day's food unchanged and watch the litter box and how quickly they finish the next meal.
