My 8 kg dog grabbed a handful of granola with raisins from the holiday buffet — should I induce vomiting right away?

Short answer

Do not induce vomiting unless your vet tells you to. Raisins are toxic to dogs, but forcing vomit can cause choking if the granola is dry and clumpy. Call your vet immediately and tell them your dog’s weight, that raisins were in the mix, and how much he might have eaten. They will calculate the risk and may have you bring him in for safe, supervised vomiting. Watch for vomiting, lethargy, or loss of appetite in the next 24 hours — these are the first signs of raisin toxicity. Keep all snack bowls pushed back from the table edge at future parties.

Raisins, chocolate chips, nuts and sugar all show up in granola. Usually a no.

Dogs and cats carry the same rating (Feed with care), so the notes below hold for either pet.

Granola is not poisonous to dogs, but it is easy to over-feed. Rich fat, salt or seasoning can bring on vomiting or diarrhoea within a day, and repeated large portions are a recognised trigger for pancreatitis.

If it ate some before you noticed, watch for vomiting, diarrhoea, loss of appetite, unusual tiredness or a painful, swollen abdomen over the next 24 hours. A one-off small amount in a healthy adult usually passes with water and rest; repeated exposure, a puppy or kitten, a senior, or a pet with an ongoing illness is a reason to call your vet the same day.

Why these cautions matter

Theobromine is the part that hurts. Pets clear it far more slowly than people do, so it builds up and reaches the heart and nervous system.

Grapes and raisins are linked to kidney failure in dogs, and no safe amount is reliable — some pets react after only a few.

Added sugar brings empty calories, and over months that means weight gain and dental disease — both far harder to undo than to avoid.

Granola can turn up now and then, but not as a daily habit: keep the rest of the day's food unchanged and watch the next walk and the stool that comes with it.
