This artificial sweetener triggers insulin release in cats, causing blood sugar to plummet dangerously fast. Unlike dogs, cats lack efficient liver enzymes to break it down, so the toxin lingers longer.
At this age, their organs are still developing, making them extra vulnerable to metabolic shocks. You might not see immediate symptoms, but waiting risks seizures or liver damage. The first wobbliness could mean their glucose has already crashed.
What emergency vets will do first
Clinics prioritize stabilizing blood sugar with intravenous dextrose, often before running tests. They’ll monitor heart rhythms because xylitol can also cause potassium imbalances. Your kitten may need hospitalization for 12-24 hours to prevent rebound hypoglycemia.
Bring the candy wrapper if possible—ingredient lists help estimate xylitol dosage. Even ‘natural’ sugar-free candies may hide birch sugar or other names for this toxin. Time matters: treatments work best within two hours of ingestion.
Why home monitoring isn’t safe here
Unlike chocolate poisoning where you might watch for vomiting, xylitol acts silently. A kitten could seem fine until they suddenly collapse. Their tiny bodies lack energy reserves to compensate for crashing glucose levels.
Don’t try honey or sugar water—oral sugars can’t match the rapid IV treatment needed. Inducing vomiting risks aspiration in small cats. This is one of the few toxins where every minute of delay reduces survival odds.
The hidden risk in sugar-free products
Xylitol isn’t just in candy—it’s in peanut butter, toothpaste, and even some medications. Kittens explore with their mouths, so check all household products. The dose needed to harm a cat is about 1/10th of what’s dangerous for dogs.
