Is it harmful to feed my 6-year-old beagle a small drop of vanilla extract daily in homemade treats?

Short answer

A small drop of vanilla extract once a day is unlikely to cause serious harm, but doing it regularly is not a good idea. The alcohol in the extract adds up over time and can irritate your dog's stomach or affect their liver with repeated exposure. If your beagle shows any vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, or wobbly走路, stop feeding it and call your vet. Consider using a tiny scrape of vanilla bean instead — no alcohol, just flavor.

Vanilla itself is fine, but extract is mostly alcohol. Use only a drop, or use vanilla bean.

Dogs and cats carry the same rating (Feed with care), so the notes below hold for either pet.

Vanilla extract is not poisonous to dogs, but it is easy to over-feed. Rich fat, salt or seasoning can bring on vomiting or diarrhoea within a day, and repeated large portions are a recognised trigger for pancreatitis.

If it ate some before you noticed, watch for vomiting, diarrhoea, loss of appetite, unusual tiredness or a painful, swollen abdomen over the next 24 hours. A one-off small amount in a healthy adult usually passes with water and rest; repeated exposure, a puppy or kitten, a senior, or a pet with an ongoing illness is a reason to call your vet the same day.
