How do I stop my 10 kg dog from drinking coconut water out of the party punch bowl at our backyard BBQ this weekend?

Short answer

Put the punch bowl on a high, stable table where he can't reach, and assign a guest to be the drink server so the bowl isn't left unattended. A few laps of coconut water won't harm him, but a whole bowlful could cause diarrhea from the sugar and potassium. More importantly, punch often contains alcohol or other unsafe ingredients for dogs. Train a solid 'leave it' command with a high-value treat before the party, and keep his water bowl full and in a shaded spot so he's less tempted to sample the human drinks.

A small amount is safe, but it is high in potassium — skip it if your pet has kidney disease.

Dogs and cats carry the same rating (Safe to share), so the notes below hold for either pet.

Coconut water is not toxic to dogs. The real limit is calories, fat and salt, so treat it as a small extra alongside the normal ration rather than a meal in itself.

There is no poisoning risk here, and the usual problem is simply eating too much at once: a heavy fat or salt load can bring on loose stools or a single vomit. Offer water, keep an eye on the pet for 24 hours, and do not induce vomiting.

Coconut water can stay on the rotation, but only as an extra mouthful: keep the rest of the day's food unchanged and watch the next walk and the stool that comes with it.
