My 4 kg cat ate about a quarter teaspoon of turmeric powder from the counter. Is that a safe amount or should I be worried about an upset stomach?

Short answer

A quarter teaspoon is likely to cause an upset stomach, like vomiting or diarrhoea. A safe pinch is much smaller — think the amount that would barely cover your fingertip. Watch her closely for the next 6-12 hours for any vomiting, unusual lethargy, or refusal to eat. Offer her plain, cooked chicken or her regular food to see if she'll keep it down. If she vomits more than once or seems off, call your own vet for advice.

A small pinch is safe and is used in some joint supplements. Large doses upset the stomach.

Dogs and cats carry the same rating (Safe to share), so the notes below hold for either pet.

Turmeric is not toxic to cats. The real limit is calories, fat and salt, so treat it as a small extra alongside the normal ration rather than a meal in itself.

There is no poisoning risk here, and the usual problem is simply eating too much at once: a heavy fat or salt load can bring on loose stools or a single vomit. Offer water, keep an eye on the pet for 24 hours, and do not induce vomiting.

Turmeric can stay on the rotation, but only as an extra mouthful: keep the rest of the day's food unchanged and watch the litter box and how quickly they finish the next meal.
