Are commercial cat treats made with crawfish and garlic powder safe for my 3 kg female who gets anxious at the vet?

Short answer

Any treat listing garlic powder is unsafe for cats — garlic is far more toxic than onion to felines and can cause hemolytic anemia even in small amounts. Plain cooked crawfish tail meat is fine for a 3 kg cat as an occasional treat, but the garlic version crosses into the danger zone. Look for products that list crawfish as the sole protein source with no allium seasoning. If your cat has already eaten a garlic-flavored treat, watch for pale gums, weakness, or dark urine over the next 24–48 hours and call your vet if anything looks off.

Plain cooked tail meat is safe. Cajun or garlic-butter versions are not.

Dogs and cats carry the same rating (Safe to share), so the notes below hold for either pet.

Crawfish is not toxic to cats. The real limit is calories, fat and salt, so treat it as a small extra alongside the normal ration rather than a meal in itself.

There is no poisoning risk here, and the usual problem is simply eating too much at once: a heavy fat or salt load can bring on loose stools or a single vomit. Offer water, keep an eye on the pet for 24 hours, and do not induce vomiting.

Why these cautions matter

Garlic and onion damage a pet's red blood cells and can bring on anaemia. Signs are often delayed for several days, so looking fine straight afterwards does not rule it out.

Rich, fatty food is the classic trigger for pancreatitis, a painful inflammation of the pancreas that usually needs veterinary treatment rather than rest alone.

Crawfish can stay on the rotation, but only as an extra mouthful: keep the rest of the day's food unchanged and watch the litter box and how quickly they finish the next meal.
