Why plain broth changes the risk level

Watch for increased thirst from natural sodium in the shellfish.
Cats process seafood proteins efficiently, so the tail meat itself isn't concerning unless it was spoiled. If the soup sat out for hours before your cat sampled it, foodborne bacteria could trigger vomiting within 2-6 hours, unrelated to the crawfish.
How much crawfish meat cats can handle
A few bite-sized pieces are roughly equivalent to a cat's normal meal portion of wet food. The high moisture content in both the broth and the tail meat actually helps prevent dehydration. Unlike dogs, cats rarely overindulge in shellfish due to its strong odor—they're more likely to lick the broth and leave the chunks.
If your cat consumed more than 5-6 small pieces, the excess protein might cause loose stools tomorrow. This isn't toxicity, just digestive overload. Offer their regular food at the next mealtime to balance their diet.
Signs that mean 'call the vet'
While plain crawfish soup is low-risk, any sudden difficulty breathing or facial swelling warrants an emergency visit—these signal rare shellfish allergies. More commonly, if your cat starts pawing at their mouth repeatedly, the broth may have contained hidden citrus or pepper residues.
For senior cats or those with kidney disease, even plain seafood broths can exacerbate urinary issues due to mineral content. If your cat hasn't urinated in over 12 hours or cries in the litter box, skip monitoring and go straight to the clinic.
The 24-hour observation window
Most reactions to unseasoned crawfish appear within 8 hours if they occur at all. Set aside a quiet space with fresh water and their litter box nearby. Normal behavior includes brief curiosity about the new smell or slight increase in water consumption.
If your cat retreats to hide under furniture for more than 6 hours straight or develops tremors—extremely unlikely with plain soup—these are red flags. For average healthy cats, this scenario doesn't require preemptive vet visits unless you see blood in their vomit.
