My 3 kg cat just ate a slice of ripe guava with several hard seeds — what are my first steps in the next 30 minutes?

Short answer

First, check how many seeds she actually swallowed — cats often chew around them and leave the seeds on the floor. The ripe flesh is safe, but hard seeds can irritate the stomach lining or cause a minor blockage in a small cat. Offer a teaspoon of plain canned pumpkin or a bit of wet food to help move any seeds through her system. Watch for repeated vomiting, straining in the litter box, or a loss of appetite over the next 24 hours. If she seems uncomfortable or stops eating, call your vet to discuss whether an exam is needed.

Ripe flesh is safe in small amounts. The hard seeds can upset a sensitive stomach.

Dogs and cats carry the same rating (Safe to share), so the notes below hold for either pet.

Guava is not toxic to cats. The real limit is calories, fat and salt, so treat it as a small extra alongside the normal ration rather than a meal in itself.

There is no poisoning risk here, and the usual problem is simply eating too much at once: a heavy fat or salt load can bring on loose stools or a single vomit. Offer water, keep an eye on the pet for 24 hours, and do not induce vomiting.

Why these cautions matter

Stone-fruit pits and some seeds release cyanide when crushed, and quite apart from that they are a choking and blockage hazard.

Guava can stay on the rotation, but only as an extra mouthful: keep the rest of the day's food unchanged and watch the litter box and how quickly they finish the next meal.
