My 5 kg cat just ate a small apple core with seeds from the kitchen counter 10 minutes ago. What are the first steps I should take?

Short answer

First, stay calm and check how much she actually ate. A single small core poses a low cyanide risk, but the seeds and tough core can cause a stomach upset or even a blockage. Do not try to induce vomiting unless your vet instructs you to. Offer her a small meal of her regular wet food, which can help cushion any sharp pieces and move them through. Watch closely for vomiting, loss of appetite, or signs of abdominal pain like hunching over in the next few hours. If you see any of these, or if she ate a large amount, call your vet for guidance.

Flesh is safe in slices. Seeds contain cyanide compounds — remove the core and seeds. Small amounts of peel are fine.

Dogs and cats carry the same rating (Feed with care), so the notes below hold for either pet.

Apple is not poisonous to cats, but it is easy to over-feed. Rich fat, salt or seasoning can bring on vomiting or diarrhoea within a day, and repeated large portions are a recognised trigger for pancreatitis.

If it ate some before you noticed, watch for vomiting, diarrhoea, loss of appetite, unusual tiredness or a painful, swollen abdomen over the next 24 hours. A one-off small amount in a healthy adult usually passes with water and rest; repeated exposure, a puppy or kitten, a senior, or a pet with an ongoing illness is a reason to call your vet the same day.

Why these cautions matter

Stone-fruit pits and some seeds release cyanide when crushed, and quite apart from that they are a choking and blockage hazard.

Apple can turn up now and then, but not as a daily habit: keep the rest of the day's food unchanged and watch the litter box and how quickly they finish the next meal.
