Why Are Cat Health Products a Risk?
Many medications and treatments are species-specific. A product safe for cats can be toxic to dogs, and vice-versa.
Topical parasite treatments for cats often contain pyrethrins or permethrins, which are highly toxic to cats if a dog formula is used, and can also poison dogs if a cat licks a treated dog.
Even ingestible supplements or hairball remedies can cause gastrointestinal upset or toxicity if the wrong dose is given or if a dog eats the entire tube.
Why speed matters
Delaying care significantly worsens outcomes. Some signs appear hours or days later, so "looks fine right now" is not a reason to wait.
Signs to watch for
- Drooling, vomiting, or diarrhea
- Tremors, muscle twitching, or seizures (from pyrethrin toxicity)
- Lethargy or weakness
- Loss of coordination or appearing 'drunk'
- Skin redness, irritation, or hair loss at the application site
- Difficulty breathing
What to do right now
- Call your veterinarian or a poison helpline immediately.
- Tell them exactly what product was used, on which pet, and how much.
- Do NOT induce vomiting unless specifically instructed, especially for topical exposures.
- If it's a topical product, prevent your pets from grooming themselves or each other. An Elizabethan collar may be needed.
- Bring the product packaging with you to the veterinary clinic.
