My 5 kg dog ate two peeled lychee pieces but I'm worried about the pit — is the flesh dangerous for a small dog?

Short answer

The peeled lychee flesh itself is not toxic to dogs, but it is extremely high in sugar, which means even a small 5 kg dog should only have a very limited amount. The pit is the real danger — it is a choking and intestinal obstruction hazard that must never be given. Watch your dog closely over the next several hours for vomiting, diarrhoea, or signs of stomach discomfort, since sugar can trigger gastrointestinal upset in small breeds. Call your vet if she shows any of these symptoms or if she swallowed the pit at all.

Flesh only, and only a little — it is very high in sugar. The pit is a choking and obstruction hazard.

Dogs and cats carry the same rating (Feed with care), so the notes below hold for either pet.

Lychee is not poisonous to dogs, but it is easy to over-feed. Rich fat, salt or seasoning can bring on vomiting or diarrhoea within a day, and repeated large portions are a recognised trigger for pancreatitis.

If it ate some before you noticed, watch for vomiting, diarrhoea, loss of appetite, unusual tiredness or a painful, swollen abdomen over the next 24 hours. A one-off small amount in a healthy adult usually passes with water and rest; repeated exposure, a puppy or kitten, a senior, or a pet with an ongoing illness is a reason to call your vet the same day.

Why these cautions matter

Added sugar brings empty calories, and over months that means weight gain and dental disease — both far harder to undo than to avoid.

Stone-fruit pits and some seeds release cyanide when crushed, and quite apart from that they are a choking and blockage hazard.
