Short answer

Yes, go to an emergency vet right away. Castor beans contain ricin, an extremely potent toxin, and any exposure is serious. Symptoms like vomiting and bloody diarrhea can be delayed, so waiting is dangerous. Bring the capsule with you and call the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center at (888) 426-4435 on the way.

Why is this dangerous?

Ricin is a toxalbumin that stops cells making protein. It is one of the most potent plant poisons known, and it attacks the gut lining, liver, kidneys and lungs.

Whole swallowed seeds may pass through, but chewed seeds release the toxin — and pets chew. Signs are often delayed 12–48 hours, so a pet that looks fine at first is still an emergency.

Why speed matters

Delaying care significantly worsens outcomes. Some signs appear hours or days later, so "looks fine right now" is not a reason to wait.

Signs to watch for

  • Vomiting and bloody diarrhoea, often severe
  • Drooling, abdominal pain, dehydration
  • Weakness, collapse, shock
  • Tremors and seizures
  • Coughing or breathing difficulty if inhaled dust

What to do right now

  1. Go to an emergency vet now — do not wait for symptoms, they arrive too late to treat easily.
  2. Bring the seeds or the plant so the vet knows what was eaten.
  3. Do not induce vomiting unless a vet or poison line instructs you.
  4. Castor plants are ornamental in many warm regions — remove them from any yard a pet uses.
If your pet shows any of the signs above, go to the nearest emergency vet now and call ahead.

The step-by-step response, from the first minute to the vet visit, is in our Castor Bean (Ricin) emergency guide.
