My 4-month-old puppy ate about half a cup of cooked rye from the floor, but my other adult dog didn't. What should I do?

Short answer

Yes, that's safe. Plain cooked rye is not toxic to dogs, and a half-cup is a reasonable amount for a puppy to have eaten. Just keep an eye on him for any mild stomach upset like soft stool over the next day. Offer him his normal food and fresh water, and contact your own vet if he seems off.

Plain cooked rye is safe in small amounts.

Dogs and cats carry the same rating (Safe to share), so the notes below hold for either pet.

Rye is not toxic to dogs. The real limit is calories, fat and salt, so treat it as a small extra alongside the normal ration rather than a meal in itself.

There is no poisoning risk here, and the usual problem is simply eating too much at once: a heavy fat or salt load can bring on loose stools or a single vomit. Offer water, keep an eye on the pet for 24 hours, and do not induce vomiting.
