How can I train my 12 kg curious puppy to leave my potted oregano plant alone and store it safely?

Short answer

Start by placing the pot on a high windowsill or shelf he cannot reach — puppies jump. For training, use the 'leave it' command: hold a treat in one closed hand and let him sniff, saying 'leave it' firmly; when he backs off, reward him from your other hand. Practice daily with the oregano pot present, gradually moving it closer to the floor as he obeys. The fresh leaves themselves are safe if he snags one, but you want to prevent him from digging up the soil or chewing the pot. If he does eat a leaf or two, just watch for any unusual stomach upset; oregano in culinary amounts is harmless.

Oregano — Food safety facts

Safe to share · Dogs · full breakdown on the linked food page

Safe in the small amounts used in cooking. Concentrated essential oil is not.

Dogs and cats carry the same rating (Safe to share), so the notes below hold for either pet.

Oregano is not toxic to dogs. The real limit is calories, fat and salt, so treat it as a small extra alongside the normal ration rather than a meal in itself.

There is no poisoning risk here, and the usual problem is simply eating too much at once: a heavy fat or salt load can bring on loose stools or a single vomit. Offer water, keep an eye on the pet for 24 hours, and do not induce vomiting.

Oregano can stay on the rotation, but only as an extra mouthful: keep the rest of the day's food unchanged and watch the next walk and the stool that comes with it.
