I'm nursing my 4 kg cat and considering adding soaked chia seeds to her diet — is that safe for her and her kittens?

Short answer

Soaked chia seeds are safe for a nursing 4 kg cat and can actually be a helpful addition. The omega-3 fatty acids support milk quality, and the soluble fiber can aid digestion. Just make sure the seeds are fully soaked in water first — dry chia expands rapidly and can block the throat. Start with half a teaspoon mixed into her wet food and watch for any loose stools, since too much fiber too quickly can cause mild diarrhea. If her kittens seem healthy and she is gaining weight well, the chia is doing more good than harm.

Safe when soaked or mixed into wet food. Dry chia swells and can block the throat.

Dogs and cats carry the same rating (Safe to share), so the notes below hold for either pet.

Chia seeds is not toxic to cats. The real limit is calories, fat and salt, so treat it as a small extra alongside the normal ration rather than a meal in itself.

There is no poisoning risk here, and the usual problem is simply eating too much at once: a heavy fat or salt load can bring on loose stools or a single vomit. Offer water, keep an eye on the pet for 24 hours, and do not induce vomiting.

Chia seeds can stay on the rotation, but only as an extra mouthful: keep the rest of the day's food unchanged and watch the litter box and how quickly they finish the next meal.
