Why are wild mushrooms so risky for dogs?
Dogs eat mushrooms on walks because they smell interesting. While many are harmless, a single Amanita (death cap) mushroom can cause irreversible liver failure that is frequently fatal. Because most dogs cannot be identified by their owners, veterinarians treat unknown wild-mushroom ingestion as a possible emergency.
Why speed matters
Delaying care significantly worsens outcomes. Some signs appear hours or days later, so "looks fine right now" is not a reason to wait.
Symptoms of mushrooms poisoning
- Onset can be 30 min–12 h depending on the species
- Vomiting, drooling, watery diarrhoea
- Lethargy, jaundice (liver damage)
- Tremors, seizures, coma in severe cases
What to do right now
- This is an emergency — call your vet immediately.
- Do not wait for symptoms; liver damage is often silent until severe.
- Collect a sample (put a mushroom in a paper bag) or photograph it for the vet to identify.
- Tell the vet when and where your dog ate it.
