Why a 25 kg dog's size doesn't protect them
A larger dog might seem safer, but ethylene glycol's toxicity works differently from most poisons. The chemical disrupts kidney function at a cellular level, and a 25 kg body can't dilute or process even small amounts effectively. Half a cup—the volume of a shallow puddle—contains enough concentrated toxin to overwhelm their filtration system completely within 12 hours.
Watch for early signs like excessive thirst or urination in the first hour, which owners often miss. The deceptive 'calm phase' around 3-6 hours post-ingestion is when irreversible kidney damage begins. By the time vomiting or seizures start, the window for the antidote is closing fast.
How puddle-drinking differs from direct ingestion
Dogs lapping from a puddle often consume more than owners realize—their tongue's scooping action moves about 5 ml per lick. Ten licks of undiluted antifreeze would reach the fatal threshold for your dog. Puddles also concentrate toxins as water evaporates, leaving behind nearly pure ethylene glycol in garage drips.
The sweet taste triggers compulsive drinking even after the initial sips. Unlike with chocolate or grapes, there's no 'safe' amount of antifreeze exposure. If you saw your dog near any automotive fluid, assume ingestion occurred and act immediately.
The critical first three hours
Time matters more than visible symptoms with antifreeze. The antidote (fomepizole) works by blocking toxin conversion before kidney damage begins, but many clinics don't stock it routinely. Your vet may need to transfer your dog to an emergency facility—call ahead while en route.
Bring the antifreeze container if possible—different brands use varying ethylene glycol concentrations. Don't induce vomiting; the chemical absorbs too quickly for this to help. Focus on transport: wrap small dogs in blankets to prevent hypothermia during seizures.
Why home monitoring isn't an option
Unlike some toxins where 'wait and see' applies, antifreeze requires presumptive treatment. Blood tests can't confirm poisoning until the damage is advancing, and the early drunkenness phase mimics harmless behaviors like fatigue.
Kidney values often appear normal for the first 12-24 hours while microscopic damage accumulates. By day three when symptoms seem severe, survival odds drop below 50% even with dialysis. This is one case where overreacting saves lives.
