Why glyphosate herbicides are dangerous
Glyphosate surfactants irritate and chemically burn the gastrointestinal lining, causing vomiting, diarrhoea, and drooling within 1 to 3 hours of exposure.
The wetting agents in commercial formulations make the chemical stick to fur and paw pads, so a pet is exposed just by walking across a freshly sprayed lawn or driveway.
A pet can also ingest the concentrate by chewing through an unused bottle stored in a garage or shed.
Why speed matters
Delaying care significantly worsens outcomes. Some signs appear hours or days later, so "looks fine right now" is not a reason to wait.
Symptoms of glyphosate-herbicides poisoning
- drooling and pawing at the mouth within 30 minutes to 2 hours of contact
- repeated vomiting starting 1 to 3 hours after ingestion or licking treated surfaces
- watery diarrhoea that may contain blood
- refusing food and water for up to a day after exposure
- lethargy and weakness that worsen alongside gastrointestinal signs
What to do right now
- call your vet or the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center at 888-426-4435 or Pet Poison Helpline at 855-764-7661 immediately
- bring the product label or a clear photo of the ingredient list to the clinic
- rinse the pet's paws and fur with lukewarm running water if they walked through sprayed grass — do not use soap unless a vet directs you
- do not induce vomiting; the surfactants in these products can cause aspiration pneumonia if vomit is inhaled into the lungs
- watch for worsening lethargy or laboured breathing and seek emergency care if these develop
