A small dog’s body can’t process alcohol efficiently—just a few tablespoons of wine may cause dangerous drops in blood sugar or body temperature. Practice 'emergency recalls' by dropping a wine cork (unused) and calling your dog away—this simulates real temptations. For persistent counter-surfers, install motion-activated alarms that emit a harmless puff of air near off-limit areas.
Post-exposure care steps
If your dog drank wine, offer small amounts of water to prevent dehydration but avoid overloading their stomach. Keep them warm—alcohol dilates blood vessels, leading to rapid heat loss. Wrap them in a blanket if they shiver, but don’t use heating pads, which can burn sensitive skin.
Note the wine’s alcohol percentage (found on the bottle) and approximate consumption time. Even if symptoms seem mild, like slight drowsiness, contact your vet—small dogs can deteriorate suddenly. Avoid home remedies like sugar water, which may worsen blood sugar instability.
