Is cooked wheat safer for my 12 kg dog than raw corn kernels?

Short answer

Yes. Cooked plain wheat is safe and easily digested for most dogs, offering carbohydrates and fiber without major risks. Raw corn kernels, on the other hand, are hard to chew and swallow whole and can cause choking or an intestinal blockage — especially in a dog of any size. If your dog has a known gluten sensitivity, even wheat can cause upset, but for the average healthy dog cooked wheat is a much safer choice than raw corn.

Plain cooked wheat is safe, though some pets are sensitive to gluten.

Dogs and cats carry the same rating (Safe to share), so the notes below hold for either pet.

Wheat is not toxic to dogs. The real limit is calories, fat and salt, so treat it as a small extra alongside the normal ration rather than a meal in itself.

There is no poisoning risk here, and the usual problem is simply eating too much at once: a heavy fat or salt load can bring on loose stools or a single vomit. Offer water, keep an eye on the pet for 24 hours, and do not induce vomiting.
