At a family BBQ, my 7 kg dog snatched a whole wheat dinner roll from the table — is plain wheat bread safe, or could the yeast or toppings hurt him?

Short answer

The plain wheat in the bread is safe, but the other ingredients are the worry. Yeast dough can expand in his stomach, and rolls often have butter, salt, or garlic powder. A single roll might just cause an upset stomach. Watch for vomiting, a bloated belly, or restlessness over the next few hours. If he seems fine, offer water and skip his next meal. Call your vet if he shows any of those signs.

Plain cooked wheat is safe, though some pets are sensitive to gluten.

Dogs and cats carry the same rating (Safe to share), so the notes below hold for either pet.

Wheat is not toxic to dogs. The real limit is calories, fat and salt, so treat it as a small extra alongside the normal ration rather than a meal in itself.

There is no poisoning risk here, and the usual problem is simply eating too much at once: a heavy fat or salt load can bring on loose stools or a single vomit. Offer water, keep an eye on the pet for 24 hours, and do not induce vomiting.

Wheat can stay on the rotation, but only as an extra mouthful: keep the rest of the day's food unchanged and watch the next walk and the stool that comes with it.
