Is it harmful to give my 3 kg Yorkshire terrier a drop of vanilla extract every day mixed into her food?

Short answer

Daily use of vanilla extract is not recommended, especially for such a small dog. Vanilla itself is safe, but the extract is mostly alcohol, and a daily drop accumulates over time in a 3 kg Yorkie. Watch for signs of stomach irritation, excessive drooling, or changes in appetite. If you notice any of these, stop the extract immediately and consult your vet. If you want to add flavor, a tiny scrap of real vanilla bean is a much safer alternative.

Vanilla itself is fine, but extract is mostly alcohol. Use only a drop, or use vanilla bean.

Dogs and cats carry the same rating (Feed with care), so the notes below hold for either pet.

Vanilla extract is not poisonous to dogs, but it is easy to over-feed. Rich fat, salt or seasoning can bring on vomiting or diarrhoea within a day, and repeated large portions are a recognised trigger for pancreatitis.

If it ate some before you noticed, watch for vomiting, diarrhoea, loss of appetite, unusual tiredness or a painful, swollen abdomen over the next 24 hours. A one-off small amount in a healthy adult usually passes with water and rest; repeated exposure, a puppy or kitten, a senior, or a pet with an ongoing illness is a reason to call your vet the same day.
