Short answer

Yes, you should be concerned. Acetaminophen is toxic to dogs, and while the exact toxic dose is around 75-100 mg/kg, any amount in a treat is a risk. The early signs can look like a simple upset stomach. Call your vet or the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center at (888) 426-4435 immediately for guidance.

Why is paracetamol so dangerous, especially for cats?

Acetaminophen overwhelms the liver’s detox pathway, producing a metabolite that damages red blood cells (methemoglobinemia) and the liver. Cats are exquisitely sensitive: ~10 mg/kg can cause clinical signs, and a single 500 mg pill can be fatal to a 4–5 kg cat.

In dogs, toxicity usually appears above ~75–100 mg/kg, but individual sensitivity varies and early signs look like a normal upset stomach.

About the dose levels
Reference bands: dogs <75 mg/kg usually safe-ish · cats are treated as an emergency at any dose above ~10 mg/kg. When in doubt, call.

Signs to watch for

  • Cats: brown/grey gums, rapid breathing (methemoglobinemia) within 1–4 h
  • Swollen face and paws (cats)
  • Vomiting, drooling, weakness
  • Jaundice, liver failure over 24–72 h
  • Death in severe untreated cases

What to do right now

  1. Treat as an emergency for cats at any dose.
  2. Go to the nearest emergency vet with the bottle — time is critical.
  3. Do not wait for symptoms.
  4. Tell the vet the exact dose and time so they can start antidote treatment (N-acetylcysteine) early.
If your pet shows any of the signs above, go to the nearest emergency vet now and call ahead.
