My 7 kg dog with a sensitive stomach licked a tablespoon of olive oil off the counter and now has diarrhea. Is this an allergy or just too much fat?

Short answer

This is almost certainly too much fat for a sensitive stomach, not an allergy. A tablespoon is a large dose for a small dog and can overwhelm the gut, causing diarrhea or pancreatitis in prone pets. Withhold food for 12 hours, offer small sips of water, and feed a bland diet like boiled chicken and rice once the diarrhea stops. If the diarrhea continues beyond 24 hours or he vomits, call your vet.

A small drizzle over food is safe. Watch the calories.

Dogs and cats carry the same rating (Safe to share), so the notes below hold for either pet.

Olive oil is not toxic to dogs. The real limit is calories, fat and salt, so treat it as a small extra alongside the normal ration rather than a meal in itself.

There is no poisoning risk here, and the usual problem is simply eating too much at once: a heavy fat or salt load can bring on loose stools or a single vomit. Offer water, keep an eye on the pet for 24 hours, and do not induce vomiting.

Olive oil can stay on the rotation, but only as an extra mouthful: keep the rest of the day's food unchanged and watch the next walk and the stool that comes with it.
