My 8 kg pregnant terrier in her 6th week accidentally ate a pinch of nutmeg from my baking counter — is this dangerous for her developing puppies?

Short answer

Yes, nutmeg is toxic to dogs in moderate amounts and can cause tremors, seizures, and disorientation. For a pregnant dog, the risk extends to her developing puppies — the toxic compounds can cross the placenta. Watch for any neurological signs such as shaking, unsteadiness, or abnormal behavior. Keep her calm and warm, and contact your vet immediately. Do not induce vomiting. Your vet may recommend monitoring her closely or inducing delivery if the exposure was significant. Avoid all spiced baked goods and keep nutmeg and other toxic spices securely stored away from pregnant and nursing dogs.

Toxic in moderate amounts — causes tremors, seizures and disorientation. Keep spiced baked goods away.

Dogs and cats carry the same rating (Do not feed), so the notes below hold for either pet.

Nutmeg should not be given to dogs at all. Even a small amount can do harm, so there is no portion small enough to be safe.

Do not induce vomiting and do not give milk or oil to “dilute” it. Note the food and roughly how much was eaten, then call your vet or a pet poison hotline and follow their advice on whether to bring the pet in straight away.

Nutmeg has no place in everyday feeding: keep the rest of the day's food unchanged after this and watch the next walk and the stool that comes with it.
