My 15 kg dog just drank about half a bottle of beer from a tipped-over glass — what should I do in the next hour before the vet?

Short answer

Call your vet or the ASPCA poison line at 888-426-4435 now. That amount of alcohol and hops is dangerous for a dog his size. Do not try to make him vomit, as he could aspirate the liquid. Keep him calm and in a cool, quiet room — hops can cause a dangerous rise in body temperature. Watch for signs like wobbliness, excessive panting, or vomiting in the next 30 minutes. Have the beer bottle or can with you so the vet knows the alcohol percentage and any other ingredients.

Alcohol plus hops, both toxic. Hops ingestion also causes dangerous overheating in dogs.

Dogs and cats carry the same rating (Do not feed), so the notes below hold for either pet.

Beer should not be given to dogs at all. Even a small amount can do harm, so there is no portion small enough to be safe.

Do not induce vomiting and do not give milk or oil to “dilute” it. Note the food and roughly how much was eaten, then call your vet or a pet poison hotline and follow their advice on whether to bring the pet in straight away.

Beer has no place in everyday feeding: keep the rest of the day's food unchanged after this and watch the next walk and the stool that comes with it.
