Why tuna salad isn’t just about fish
Mayonnaise and dressings turn this into a fat-and-salt bomb for dogs. Your 15 kg pup’s main risks are pancreatitis from rich oils and sodium ion poisoning if the salad contained salty ingredients like pickles or olives. A few tablespoons likely won’t push him into dangerous territory, but watch for excessive thirst or restlessness—early signs of salt overload.
Onion and garlic, common in tuna salads, are cumulative toxins. While today’s small amount probably won’t cause anemia, repeated exposure could. Check if he’s had other risky foods recently—leftover pizza or gravy, for instance—that might compound the problem.
The size advantage of a 15 kg dog
His larger body dilutes the impact compared to a small breed. What would hospitalize a Chihuahua might only give him mild diarrhea. Still, the mayo’s fat content could overwhelm his digestion, leading to yellowish, greasy stools within 24 hours. Bigger dogs also process mercury slower, making occasional tuna less hazardous.
Weigh him if possible—a sudden drop of over 5% body weight from vomiting or diarrhea means dehydration is setting in. Pinch the skin at his shoulders; it should snap back instantly. If it tents, he needs veterinary fluids.
Spotting delayed spice toxicity
Garlic damage unfolds over days. Pale gums, rapid breathing after light activity, or dark urine signal red blood cell destruction. These typically appear 48-72 hours post-ingestion. Today’s small dose makes this unlikely, but it’s worth knowing for future incidents involving larger amounts.
More immediately, the salad’s acidity might cause lip-smacking or drooling. Offer plain rice or boiled chicken to coat his stomach if he seems nauseated. Avoid dairy—yogurt or cheese worsen diarrhea when the gut is already irritated by oils.
When the trash holds clues
Reconstruct his buffet raid. If wrappers suggest he ate more than just tuna salad—like chocolate desserts or alcohol-soaked fruit—the risk profile changes. Grapes, macadamia nuts, or xylitol-sweetened foods sometimes appear at parties and are far more dangerous than tuna.
For this incident alone, withhold food (not water) for 8-12 hours to let his pancreas rest. Resume meals with bland food in tablespoon-sized portions every two hours. If he can’t keep these down or acts lethargic by morning, skip the wait-and-see approach.
