My 20 kg dog just ate a few spoonfuls of blueberry muffin batter that had raw egg and flour in it — are the blueberries the main worry?

Short answer

No, the blueberries are the safest part. The raw eggs carry a small salmonella risk, and the raw flour can upset his stomach. Watch for vomiting or diarrhea in the next 6-12 hours. A few blueberries in batter won't hurt him, but the rich fats and sugars in a finished muffin could cause pancreatitis if he ate a lot. For now, just offer him his normal food and plenty of water. Call your own vet if he seems unusually lethargic, can't keep water down, or has diarrhea that lasts more than a day.

Blueberry — Food safety facts

A safe, healthy treat — washed and whole. Good source of antioxidants.

Dogs and cats carry the same rating (Safe to share), so the notes below hold for either pet.

Blueberry is not toxic to dogs. The real limit is calories, fat and salt, so treat it as a small extra alongside the normal ration rather than a meal in itself.

There is no poisoning risk here, and the usual problem is simply eating too much at once: a heavy fat or salt load can bring on loose stools or a single vomit. Offer water, keep an eye on the pet for 24 hours, and do not induce vomiting.

Blueberry can stay on the rotation, but only as an extra mouthful: keep the rest of the day's food unchanged and watch the next walk and the stool that comes with it.
