Check for breadcrumb texture or blackened grill marks that indicate added fats.
Dogs tolerate plain baked cod better than cats because their digestive systems handle moderate fat better. Still, a 5kg Chihuahua eating a palm-sized portion needs monitoring for stool changes, while a Labrador could process that amount easily. The real danger comes from hidden ingredients like lemon-butter sauce or cajun rubs that contain onion granules.
Immediate steps for a 15kg mixed breed
Offer ice cubes instead of a full water bowl—this prevents gulping too fast while keeping them hydrated. If the cod was crumbed, watch for gagging sounds that might suggest a breading clump stuck in the throat. Most dogs will naturally clear this by coughing, but persistent hackng needs vet attention.
Skip their next regular meal to give the digestive tract a reset, but don't fast puppies under six months. For dogs who ate less than a tablespoon of plain cod, resume normal feeding after four hours unless they're drooling excessively or showing belly discomfort when touched. When to bypass monitoring and call the vet
If the cod was cooked in wine or beer batter, the alcohol content becomes dangerous below 10kg body weight. Watch for wobbliness or dilated pupils within an hour. Similarly, dogs with known seafood allergies may develop hives along their belly or difficulty breathing regardless of portion size.
Any dog showing repeated attempts to vomit with nothing coming up needs emergency care—this suggests a bone fragment blocking the intestine. Likewise, if their gums appear pale or sticky instead of moist and pink, internal bleeding from sharp bones could be occurring. Normal cod ingestion shouldn't cause these severe reactions.
