Is a handful of sugary breakfast cereal worse for my 10 kg dog than a spoonful of plain cooked oatmeal?

Short answer

Yes, the cereal is riskier. Plain oatmeal is generally safe in small amounts, offering some fiber. Sugary cereal, however, often contains raisins, which are highly toxic to dogs and can cause kidney failure. Even without raisins, the high sugar content can lead to an upset stomach, gas, or diarrhea. Always check the cereal box ingredient list for raisins or currants before even considering sharing. If your dog ate cereal with raisins, call your vet immediately. For plain cereal without raisins, a small amount might just cause a mild tummy ache, but it's still not a good regular treat.

Sugar and often raisins, which are toxic to dogs. Check the box before sharing.

Dogs and cats carry the same rating (Feed with care), so the notes below hold for either pet.

Breakfast cereal is not poisonous to dogs, but it is easy to over-feed. Rich fat, salt or seasoning can bring on vomiting or diarrhoea within a day, and repeated large portions are a recognised trigger for pancreatitis.

If it ate some before you noticed, watch for vomiting, diarrhoea, loss of appetite, unusual tiredness or a painful, swollen abdomen over the next 24 hours. A one-off small amount in a healthy adult usually passes with water and rest; repeated exposure, a puppy or kitten, a senior, or a pet with an ongoing illness is a reason to call your vet the same day.

Why these cautions matter

Grapes and raisins are linked to kidney failure in dogs, and no safe amount is reliable — some pets react after only a few.

Added sugar brings empty calories, and over months that means weight gain and dental disease — both far harder to undo than to avoid.

Breakfast cereal can turn up now and then, but not as a daily habit: keep the rest of the day's food unchanged and watch the next walk and the stool that comes with it.
