Why rancidity matters more than poison for small dogs
A 5 kg dog eating a spoonful of hemp seeds faces very different risks from the seeds' exposure than their toxicity. Overnight air exposure degrades the oils in hemp seeds, potentially making them rancid — but this is a digestive issue, not poisoning. Your dog's smaller size means even mild stomach upset could hit harder than in a larger pet, so note any reluctance to eat or unusual lethargy after the fact.
Check the seeds' condition by rubbing a few between your fingers — if they feel sticky, smell like old paint, or left an oily residue, they've likely oxidized. While not acutely toxic, rancid fats can cause nausea or loose stools in sensitive dogs. Offer smaller, bland meals for the next 12 hours to ease digestion if you suspect the seeds were off.
The first signs to track in a petite pup
With a dog this size, monitor closely for subtle changes like lip-licking, swallowing more than usual, or seeking out grass to eat — these often precede vomiting. Diarrhea may take 6-12 hours to appear if the seeds irritated their gut. Hydration is key: ensure fresh water is available and watch that they're drinking normally, as small dogs dehydrate faster.
Unlike chocolate or xylitol, hemp seeds won't cause seizures or organ damage even when spoiled — but a 5 kg body can't handle fluid loss as well. If your dog pants excessively, has sunken eyes, or their skin tents when gently pinched, skip waiting and call your vet. For now, just keep their routine calm and avoid rich foods.
How overnight conditions change the risk
A kitchen counter in a humid climate poses more risk than a dry pantry. If your seeds were near a steaming kettle or uncovered during high humidity, they may have absorbed enough moisture to grow mold overnight — visible fuzz or dark spots mean toss them immediately. Dry, cool kitchens with good airflow are less concerning.
Your dog's single spoonful likely contained only a few dozen seeds, limiting any exposure. Compare this to a whole bag: smaller amounts give less time for harmful bacteria like salmonella to multiply. Still, wipe down the area where the seeds sat to prevent your dog from licking up residual oils or crumbs that could further upset their stomach.
When to relax versus when to call
No vomiting or diarrhea after 8 hours? The worst is probably over. Dogs process small amounts of rancid food within half a day if they'll react at all. You might notice slightly softer stool tomorrow, but this should resolve without intervention. Stick to their regular diet unless symptoms appear.
However, if your dog already has a sensitive stomach or a history of pancreatitis, call your vet for guidance — even safe foods can trigger flare-ups in predisposed pets. Likewise, any repeated vomiting (more than twice in an hour), blood in stool, or refusal to drink warrants immediate professional advice. For most small dogs though, this is a wait-and-see scenario.
