My 8 kg dog ate two bites of warm apple crisp with cinnamon sugar topping — is the cooked cinnamon in a dessert dangerous?

Short answer

Watch him closely for the next few hours, but two bites of a baked dessert are unlikely to contain a toxic amount of cinnamon. The main risks are the sugar, butter, and possibly raisins in the apple crisp, which are more concerning. Check if he starts pawing at his mouth from irritation or has loose stools later. Do not induce vomiting — just offer plenty of fresh water to help flush the sugar and spices. If he shows signs of low blood sugar like weakness or collapse, which is rare from this small amount, contact your vet. For future safety, keep spiced desserts out of reach.

A pinch of powder is usually fine. Large amounts irritate the mouth and stomach and can lower blood sugar.

Dogs and cats carry the same rating (Feed with care), so the notes below hold for either pet.

Cinnamon is not poisonous to dogs, but it is easy to over-feed. Rich fat, salt or seasoning can bring on vomiting or diarrhoea within a day, and repeated large portions are a recognised trigger for pancreatitis.

If it ate some before you noticed, watch for vomiting, diarrhoea, loss of appetite, unusual tiredness or a painful, swollen abdomen over the next 24 hours. A one-off small amount in a healthy adult usually passes with water and rest; repeated exposure, a puppy or kitten, a senior, or a pet with an ongoing illness is a reason to call your vet the same day.

Why these cautions matter

Added sugar brings empty calories, and over months that means weight gain and dental disease — both far harder to undo than to avoid.

Cinnamon can turn up now and then, but not as a daily habit: keep the rest of the day's food unchanged and watch the next walk and the stool that comes with it.
