How cooking changes (and doesn't change) the risk
Heat doesn't destroy 5-HTP—it remains fully active in cooked foods. Your 8 kg dog ingested whatever dose you'd intended for yourself, now concentrated in the stew's remnants. The rice and fats may delay stomach emptying, prolonging exposure as the tablets continue dissolving.
Estimate how many milligrams were in the entire dish versus what was left. If you crumbled two 50mg tablets into four portions and they licked one portion's remains, that's still ~25mg—a significant dose for a small dog. Check their paws and muzzle for sticky residue that could lead to secondary ingestion through grooming.
Why ingredient lists matter more than the main label
Many 5-HTP supplements contain secondary active ingredients like GABA or L-theanine that amplify effects. Read every word on the bottle aloud to the poison control operator, including the 'other ingredients' section—fillers like lactose can cause separate digestive issues in dogs.
Note if the tablets were enteric-coated. These resist stomach acid and may not have fully broken down in the stew, creating a time-release danger. Your dog's gagging or repeated swallowing could indicate a partially dissolved tablet stuck in their throat.
Behavioral red flags in smaller dogs
An 8 kg dog will show neurological symptoms faster than larger breeds. Watch for 'fly-biting' snaps at invisible objects or compulsive circling—these often precede full seizures. Time how long any tremors last; episodes under 30 seconds are less critical than continuous shaking.
Feel their ears and paw pads. Serotonin surges often cause blood vessel changes that make extremities feel unusually hot or cold. Note any exaggerated reactions to normal household sounds—whining at the refrigerator hum or barking at ceiling fans suggests sensory overload.
Immediate environment adjustments
Remove collars or harnesses. Neck pressure can worsen breathing difficulties if respiratory distress develops. Replace their water bowl with ice cubes to prevent gulping large amounts that might trigger vomiting.
Set up confinement in a puppy-proofed area with no stairs or sharp edges. Affected dogs may lose coordination and stumble into walls. Keep a video camera recording if you step away briefly—subtle symptoms are easier for vets to assess when seen in motion.
