My 10 kg diabetic dog ate one peeled lychee — is the high sugar content a problem for his blood glucose?

Short answer

One peeled lychee is a small amount of sugar, but it can still cause a brief spike in his blood glucose. The bigger risk with lychees is the pit, which you've avoided. Watch him for signs of high blood sugar over the next few hours, like increased thirst or more frequent urination. If he's on insulin, you might need to monitor his levels more closely at his next check. A single piece of fruit flesh isn't an emergency, but it's a good reminder to keep all sugary treats out of his reach.

Flesh only, and only a little — it is very high in sugar. The pit is a choking and obstruction hazard.

Dogs and cats carry the same rating (Feed with care), so the notes below hold for either pet.

Lychee is not poisonous to dogs, but it is easy to over-feed. Rich fat, salt or seasoning can bring on vomiting or diarrhoea within a day, and repeated large portions are a recognised trigger for pancreatitis.

If it ate some before you noticed, watch for vomiting, diarrhoea, loss of appetite, unusual tiredness or a painful, swollen abdomen over the next 24 hours. A one-off small amount in a healthy adult usually passes with water and rest; repeated exposure, a puppy or kitten, a senior, or a pet with an ongoing illness is a reason to call your vet the same day.

Why these cautions matter

Added sugar brings empty calories, and over months that means weight gain and dental disease — both far harder to undo than to avoid.

Stone-fruit pits and some seeds release cyanide when crushed, and quite apart from that they are a choking and blockage hazard.

Lychee can turn up now and then, but not as a daily habit: keep the rest of the day's food unchanged and watch the next walk and the stool that comes with it.
