How do I stop my 3 kg curious cat from chewing my indoor oregano plant?

Short answer

Oregano itself is safe in tiny amounts, but you want to discourage plant-chewing altogether. Move the pot to a high shelf or a room your cat cannot access — cats are excellent jumpers, so consider a hanging planter. You can also spray the leaves with a bitter pet deterrent spray; the taste is unpleasant but harmless. Offering cat grass in a separate, accessible pot gives her a safe outlet for that chewing instinct. Consistency is key; if she gets a nibble once, she’ll remember the spot.

Safe in the small amounts used in cooking. Concentrated essential oil is not.

Dogs and cats carry the same rating (Safe to share), so the notes below hold for either pet.

Oregano is not toxic to cats. The real limit is calories, fat and salt, so treat it as a small extra alongside the normal ration rather than a meal in itself.

There is no poisoning risk here, and the usual problem is simply eating too much at once: a heavy fat or salt load can bring on loose stools or a single vomit. Offer water, keep an eye on the pet for 24 hours, and do not induce vomiting.

Oregano can stay on the rotation, but only as an extra mouthful: keep the rest of the day's food unchanged and watch the litter box and how quickly they finish the next meal.
