My senior cat on medication chewed two bites of a valerian root tablet — is this an emergency?

Short answer

Yes, it's urgent. Senior cats on medication are at higher risk. Call your vet or the ASPCA poison line immediately. Bring the tablet and vet records. Watch for signs of sedation or excitement. Do not induce vomiting if the cat is already sedated.

Why is this dangerous?

Melatonin is used in pets at tiny vet-calculated doses; a human 5–10 mg tablet can cause marked drowsiness, wobbliness and, in some pets, the opposite — restlessness and agitation.

Zolpidem (Ambien) and prescription sedatives are far stronger and can cause profound sedation, loss of coordination, breathing depression and, paradoxically, excitement and seizures.

Why speed matters

Delaying care significantly worsens outcomes. Some signs appear hours or days later, so "looks fine right now" is not a reason to wait.

Signs to watch for

  • Drowsiness, sedation, difficulty waking
  • Wobbliness, staggering, falling over
  • Vomiting, drooling
  • Agitation, restlessness, unusual barking or crying
  • Slow or shallow breathing, tremors, seizures (emergency)

What to do right now

  1. Call your vet or a poison line immediately — sedative overdose can depress breathing.
  2. Bring the bottle; brand names differ widely in strength.
  3. Keep the pet warm and do not leave a sedated pet unattended near stairs or water.
  4. Do not induce vomiting if the pet is already drowsy — the airway must stay protected.
If your pet shows any of the signs above, go to the nearest emergency vet now and call ahead.
