My 5 kg cat licked a teaspoon of vanilla extract 2 hours ago and seems wobbly — how long should I monitor her and what tests might the vet run?

Short answer

Monitor her closely for at least 12 hours. The alcohol in vanilla extract can cause temporary incoordination and drowsiness, which usually peaks within a few hours and fades as her body processes it. If the wobbliness worsens or she starts vomiting, call your vet. They might check her blood glucose and electrolyte levels, as alcohol can cause hypoglycemia. They'll also listen to her heart and lungs. Keep her in a safe, quiet space where she can't fall off furniture, and offer fresh water to help flush her system.

Vanilla extract — Food safety facts

Vanilla itself is fine, but extract is mostly alcohol. Use only a drop, or use vanilla bean.

Dogs and cats carry the same rating (Feed with care), so the notes below hold for either pet.

Vanilla extract is not poisonous to cats, but it is easy to over-feed. Rich fat, salt or seasoning can bring on vomiting or diarrhoea within a day, and repeated large portions are a recognised trigger for pancreatitis.

If it ate some before you noticed, watch for vomiting, diarrhoea, loss of appetite, unusual tiredness or a painful, swollen abdomen over the next 24 hours. A one-off small amount in a healthy adult usually passes with water and rest; repeated exposure, a puppy or kitten, a senior, or a pet with an ongoing illness is a reason to call your vet the same day.

Vanilla extract can turn up now and then, but not as a daily habit: keep the rest of the day's food unchanged and watch the litter box and how quickly they finish the next meal.
