My 4 kg cat knocked over a bowl of plain cooked scallops that sat on the counter overnight — is it safe to let her eat them?

Short answer

No — seafood left out overnight has been in the bacterial growth zone for far too long, even if it was plain and cooked. The risk is food poisoning from bacteria, not the scallop itself. If she eats it, watch for vomiting or diarrhea within the next two to four hours. Offer fresh water and remove the bowl immediately. One or two bites from a 4 kg cat may cause nothing more than an upset stomach, but why risk it when you can just toss it and give her a safe treat instead? Call your vet if she vomits more than once or seems listless the next day.

Scallops — Food safety facts

Plain cooked scallops are safe. Never serve them in garlic butter.

Dogs and cats carry the same rating (Safe to share), so the notes below hold for either pet.

Scallops is not toxic to cats. The real limit is calories, fat and salt, so treat it as a small extra alongside the normal ration rather than a meal in itself.

There is no poisoning risk here, and the usual problem is simply eating too much at once: a heavy fat or salt load can bring on loose stools or a single vomit. Offer water, keep an eye on the pet for 24 hours, and do not induce vomiting.

Why these cautions matter

Garlic and onion damage a pet's red blood cells and can bring on anaemia. Signs are often delayed for several days, so looking fine straight afterwards does not rule it out.

Rich, fatty food is the classic trigger for pancreatitis, a painful inflammation of the pancreas that usually needs veterinary treatment rather than rest alone.

Scallops can stay on the rotation, but only as an extra mouthful: keep the rest of the day's food unchanged and watch the litter box and how quickly they finish the next meal.
