My senior cat is obsessed with cooked pork — how should I store leftovers and train her to stay off the counter?

Short answer

Plain cooked pork is okay in tiny amounts, but it's best to keep it out of reach. Store leftovers in sealed containers in the fridge immediately, and never leave plates unattended. Consistently redirect her with a firm 'off' command and reward her with a appropriate cat treat when she complies. Since she's older, also be mindful that rich foods could upset her stomach more easily. If she does snatch a small, plain piece, just watch for vomiting or diarrhea and call your vet if anything seems off.

Plain cooked pork is fine in small amounts. Never raw pork (parasite risk) and no bones.

Dogs and cats carry the same rating (Feed with care), so the notes below hold for either pet.

Cooked pork is not poisonous to cats, but it is easy to over-feed. Rich fat, salt or seasoning can bring on vomiting or diarrhoea within a day, and repeated large portions are a recognised trigger for pancreatitis.

If it ate some before you noticed, watch for vomiting, diarrhoea, loss of appetite, unusual tiredness or a painful, swollen abdomen over the next 24 hours. A one-off small amount in a healthy adult usually passes with water and rest; repeated exposure, a puppy or kitten, a senior, or a pet with an ongoing illness is a reason to call your vet the same day.

Why these cautions matter

Raw animal protein carries Salmonella and E. coli risk, and those bacteria can spread to the people in the household too.

Cooked bones splinter rather than crumbling, and fragments can lodge in the throat, stomach or bowel, sometimes needing surgery to remove.
