My 5 kg cat ate lettuce from my salad bowl at lunch — is that a problem?

Short answer

Not really. Lettuce is mostly water and safe for cats, even from a human salad bowl. Just check that nothing else was in the bowl — dressing, croutons, or bacon bits can be problematic. Rinse the lettuce well before feeding any to your cat. Tear it into small pieces to make it easier to chew. A few leaves won't harm a 5 kg cat, and it might even help with hydration.

Safe and mostly water. Wash thoroughly and tear into small pieces.

Dogs and cats carry the same rating (Safe to share), so the notes below hold for either pet.

Lettuce is not toxic to cats. The real limit is calories, fat and salt, so treat it as a small extra alongside the normal ration rather than a meal in itself.

There is no poisoning risk here, and the usual problem is simply eating too much at once: a heavy fat or salt load can bring on loose stools or a single vomit. Offer water, keep an eye on the pet for 24 hours, and do not induce vomiting.

Why these cautions matter

Caffeine overstimulates the heart and nervous system, and pets clear it so slowly that tremors and restlessness drag on far longer than they would in a person.

Lettuce can stay on the rotation, but only as an extra mouthful: keep the rest of the day's food unchanged and watch the litter box and how quickly they finish the next meal.
