My 4 kg cat squeezed and ate about half a tube of anchovy paste meant as a gourmet treat — is this too much salt?

Short answer

Yes, that's a dangerous amount of salt and you should call your vet. Anchovy paste is extremely concentrated and salty, far beyond a safe 'tiny piece'. Signs of salt toxicity include excessive thirst, vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, and in severe cases, tremors or seizures. Check the tube for other ingredients like garlic or onion powder, which are also toxic to cats. Offer her fresh water to drink freely, but do not force it. Your vet may need to provide supportive care like IV fluids to restore her electrolyte balance safely.

Extremely salty, whether fresh or tinned. A tiny piece at most, and no oil-packed ones.

Dogs and cats carry the same rating (Feed with care), so the notes below hold for either pet.

Anchovy is not poisonous to cats, but it is easy to over-feed. Rich fat, salt or seasoning can bring on vomiting or diarrhoea within a day, and repeated large portions are a recognised trigger for pancreatitis.

If it ate some before you noticed, watch for vomiting, diarrhoea, loss of appetite, unusual tiredness or a painful, swollen abdomen over the next 24 hours. A one-off small amount in a healthy adult usually passes with water and rest; repeated exposure, a puppy or kitten, a senior, or a pet with an ongoing illness is a reason to call your vet the same day.

Why these cautions matter

A heavy salt load drives up thirst and urination, and in the worst cases leads to sodium ion poisoning, which is a genuine emergency.

Anchovy can turn up now and then, but not as a daily habit: keep the rest of the day's food unchanged and watch the litter box and how quickly they finish the next meal.
