My 5-week-old, 800 gram kitten licked plain cooked pork I left on the counter overnight — is that safe for a kitten that small?

Short answer

Plain cooked pork in a tiny lick-sized amount is unlikely to cause harm, but an 800 gram kitten is extremely vulnerable to bacteria from food left out overnight. Salmonella and E. coli multiply rapidly at room temperature, and a kitten that small has almost no buffer against a GI infection. Watch her closely for vomiting, diarrhea, or refusing to eat over the next 24 hours. Keep her warm and offer small amounts of water frequently. If she becomes listless or her gums look pale, take her to the vet immediately — dehydration happens fast in kittens that young.

Plain cooked pork is fine in small amounts. Never raw pork (parasite risk) and no bones.

Dogs and cats carry the same rating (Feed with care), so the notes below hold for either pet.

Cooked pork is not poisonous to cats, but it is easy to over-feed. Rich fat, salt or seasoning can bring on vomiting or diarrhoea within a day, and repeated large portions are a recognised trigger for pancreatitis.

If it ate some before you noticed, watch for vomiting, diarrhoea, loss of appetite, unusual tiredness or a painful, swollen abdomen over the next 24 hours. A one-off small amount in a healthy adult usually passes with water and rest; repeated exposure, a puppy or kitten, a senior, or a pet with an ongoing illness is a reason to call your vet the same day.

Why these cautions matter

Raw animal protein carries Salmonella and E. coli risk, and those bacteria can spread to the people in the household too.

Cooked bones splinter rather than crumbling, and fragments can lodge in the throat, stomach or bowel, sometimes needing surgery to remove.

Cooked pork can turn up now and then, but not as a daily habit: keep the rest of the day's food unchanged and watch the litter box and how quickly they finish the next meal.
