Why six hours changes the monitoring plan
Most agave syrup effects show within 2-4 hours in cats, so six hours without symptoms is reassuring. The fructose has likely already metabolized, but delayed stomach irritation is still possible. Check her litter box for unusually soft stools—the main lingering risk now is digestive upset rather than sugar toxicity.
Her small size makes two teaspoons a notable dose, but not critical. Since she's past the peak absorption window, focus on hydration. Run your finger along her gums—they should feel slick, not tacky. Cats hide dehydration well, so subtle stickiness means she needs encouragement to drink.
Overnight checks without disrupting sleep
Set up a nightlight near her favorite resting spot to observe breathing without startling her. Normal cat respiration is 20-30 breaths per minute while dozing; count this once between midnight and 2 a.m. Rapid shallow breaths or open-mouth panting would be unusual at this stage.
Place a familiar blanket in her bed—if she avoids it later, she might have nausea. Cats associate scents with discomfort, so textile rejection can signal mild illness before vomiting occurs. Have a clean towel ready near her sleeping area in case of late-onset regurgitation.
The critical 12-hour window
By morning, check for paw twitching or excessive stretching—signs of lingering blood sugar fluctuations. Agave rarely causes this in cats, but her small size increases susceptibility. Offer wet food first; if she hesitates, warm it slightly to enhance aroma and monitor her tongue movements for excessive lip-licking.
Her litter should show at least one normal-sized urine clump. Tiny frequent clumps or none at all warrant a vet call, as cats can develop urinary issues after sugar exposure. We're past the point of acute toxicity concerns, but secondary effects can still emerge.
When to pause the watch
If she grooms normally after breakfast and uses the litter box without strain, the episode is resolved. However, intermittent diarrhea over the next 48 hours isn't uncommon—switch to bland chicken (no skin or bones) for one meal if this occurs. Avoid dairy-based remedies; cats lack enzymes to process lactose during digestive stress.
Mark your calendar if she seeks out sweet smells again in the next week. Some cats develop temporary cravings post-exposure. Use bitter apple spray on kitchen surfaces as a deterrent if this happens—it's safe and breaks the association.
